As the child grows he needs more exercise to build up proper muscles and for full development of the body. When the child has come to an age at which he is able to run around, it is the duty of the parents to take her out to enable her to indulge in outdoor activities. It has been seen that in case of many parents who are themselves involved in some work, they try to keep the child busy to enable them to do their own work. In such cases the child lags in proper development during the days to come.

Generally when you talk to the parents you will come across many who will say that their kids are too busy and do not have time to go out and play every day, and some will complain that despite the availability of time, the kids do not play. It is for the parents to balance the time in a manner that the child gets a lot of physical activity in addition to study and routine home jobs.

There is a feeling in the minds of some parents that the child should remain fully busy to prevent her from indulging in some unwanted activities. However, the parents should understand that the child should participate in all activities performed by fellow kids otherwise he or she will miss out something in life. Though there is no doubt about the intentions of such parents but their thinking makes the child too busy. The pressure on the child to complete the day’s schedule as given by the parents makes her exhausted both physically and mentally. This also affects the physical and mental health of the parents alike. The schedule of the child should be so drawn that there is sufficient time for outdoor activities like sports and recreation or relaxation and meeting with other children and parents. This will make the kid social and disciplined.

Over busy children are fully worn out by the end of the day and soon they will start to exhibit the following symptoms:

Feeling of tiredness and depression.

Headache and stomach ache due to lack of adequate sleep or improper digestion of food.

Inability to concentrate on studies, complaints from school for non completion of home work.

Lack of friends and social activity is another symptom in over busy children which affect future life.

Parents responsibility

Some parents who have less time due to work or other social pressures may be a cause of making the children busy for their own convenience. This way they are spoiling the future of their own child. It is for the parents to ensure that their children are not over taxed and are not burning out. The schedule of the child should be so made that it is balanced between studies, recreation and work at home.

Keeping in mind the age of the child the parents should schedule the day for the child so that it is balanced. It will be better to draw up a calendar for the month in consultation with the child of the activities to be performed at a particular time each day. This could be pasted at some conspicuous place like fridge so that the child sees the schedule for the day quite often. It should be ok for the parents to ignore occasional variance from the schedule. If the child misses a game and indulges in other recreation, the parents should just ignore but ensure that this does not become a habit.

Ensure that there is time together for the family especially on holidays. On this day the whole family should sit together, discuss different matters and problems faced during the week, have food together and go for outing together, say at least twice a month. This will keep the children involved with parents.

This way the children will grow up to be better citizens and the parents will be proud of them when they enter their field of activity.

As a step parent you not only have to adjust to your partner, but also to your partner’s children and the ex. There are sure to be problems in the beginning because children will resent the one who is trying to take the place of their natural parent. As you get to know each other, things are bound to improve.

Some ways and tips to help a step parent cope with this situation are:

Do not say anything derogatory or negative about the natural parent in front of the child. Even if children themselves have issues with the parent, they get angry if someone else criticises them. Be polite when face to face with that parent especially if custody of children is shared. Think about how difficult the whole situation must be for that parent and deal with them in a sensitive manner. It is not going to be easy for either of you but do the best you can so that bitterness is kept to a minimum. If an ex partner is deceased, honour that person and be compassionate about the loss children feel.

Take parenting decisions after discussing them with your partner. The children might be used to different limits of discipline or your partner may not agree with your views on certain matters. Both of you should talk and arrive at a decision together. If you do not have children and your partner does, it is all the more necessary to seek the opinion of your partner in how to handle the children. And get to know them. Try to find out what they are interested in by talking to them. The likes and dislikes of different ages will be different.

Discipline should be equal for every one. Whatever rules you finally decide on must be applied consistently to all children in the house. Certain rules like time of going to bed, staying out etc. will be different for children of different ages, but they must be the same for children both of you have from previous partners, or children you have had together. If the children feel that they are treated equally, they are more likely to follow the rules and it leads to better adjustment. Even if they have to move to another house or there is some other major change, they will feel better if rules are consistent in both households. To facilitate this, adults can hold a meeting and arrive at a consensus. Otherwise children are bound to compare parents and bring them around to what they want.

Do not try to win affection or cover up your gilt with gifts. Children need love, affection and understanding but gifts cannot take their place. Don’t buy gifts to make the children feel better about you. Withhold treats if they do not follow you or misbehave. Set standards for them and make it clear that they will be punished or penalised if the standards are not met. It must be clear how much leeway they can expect. Look to satisfy their needs first and then fulfill the wants.

Look for new ways to bond with the children. Try to access the interests of your step children and do fun things with them. It could be biking together, having a barbeque night every month, paying board games some night or doing a project together. Value their feedback and repeat they most enjoy doing. Once you start having fun together love will follow on its own. Do not try to thrust a relationship on them but let it grow on them. It will then be a natural and long lasting one.

Do not try to use children to get information about yours ex partner’s house hold. Children will spend time with both the parents if you have shared custody. Do not ask them what is going on in the other house when they are back from a visit. Also don’t communicate with your ex spouse through the children but talk to the other parent directly. Keep channels open so that you are able to discuss visits, school or health problems and any other issues concerning the children. Children should not suffer for whatever differences have crept up between you.

There can be no hard and fast rules which are to be followed. What your parents did may not hold good now. Mothers may find themselves using the ‘don’t’ word very often – don’t talk so loudly, don’t fight etc. However, psychologists believe that it is better to reinforce positive ideas instead of using negative thoughts. If we look at the parenting process from a child’s prospective, we can get clues as to how mothers can do even a better job.

A mother should be consistent. A child will try to talk you into something he wants like staying out late, playing instead of doing his home work or asking you to do his/her project. He may appeal to your sense of affection or pity and try to convince you to do as he asks. You should be firm and not give in to what you perceive to be incorrect. If you give in once, the child will try again and again to travel that route. You cannot say no once you have agreed to something earlier. To avoid a scene every now and then, make it clear to the child what you will or will not agree to and stick to it.

A mother should not shout. This may seem quite difficult. When a child does not obey or is bent on doing his own thing, a mother is likely to raise her voice to get her point through. Once this happens, it vitiates the atmosphere. The child sulks and you get agitated. To avoid the situation it is best that the whole family should sit together to discuss and frame some rules. These can be displayed where everyone can see them e.g. the living room or on the fridge. The consequences of not following these rules should be put up too.

Remember, these rules hold good for both parents and children. All these discussions must be done in a calm manner. When you see your child doing something against what is defined in the rules, calmly point out that rule to him. Following the rules or suffering the consequences will take some getting used to. Pretty soon it will lead to a more relaxed atmosphere in the home.

Do not encourage arguments. Once the rules are made, it should be clear that they have to be followed. If an exception is necessary, it can be discussed calmly. If an argument starts then a child may begin to feel that it is alright to argue with his mother. The child can put forward his view point but he should know that his parents have the final say. A child should be made aware of how much leeway will be given. If he wants to stay out for an extra hour you can say he will not come home by himself but you will pick him up. If homework is missed, he will be woken up an hour early to complete it.

Don’t compare your child with other children. Each child has his own personality and capability just like adults. It is not a good idea to evaluate his performance in the light of another child. Your neighbour’s child may be good at studies or athletics, or both, but that should be no reason to berate your child who may not excel at either. Someone else’s mother may be earning more or be a better cook than you and you would not like to be compared to her, so do not hold another child as an example to your child.

What you should do is to set acceptable standards for child’s performance and then motivate him to work towards that goal. His competition should be with himself so that he does better than the last time. Do not forget to praise him when he does well.

Avoid criticising your child excessively. If all a child hears are negative comments, he will not try to improve himself. No doubt, a parent has to tell a child what is wrong and what is right and mete out punishment for unacceptable behaviour, but try not to overdo it. Point out just one short coming at a time. A child should not feel that everything he does is wrong otherwise he will become low on confidence and lose faith in his abilities. He may transgress now and then so don’t label him as ‘always lazy’, ‘always rude’ or ‘always untidy’. Find something to praise in your child every day, no matter how small it is.

Try these tips and you will have a happy child who will be ready to listen to you always.

You will observe development in both mind and body. The child grows up in size and shape and side by side the brain starts to develop and the child starts to learn a few things from parents or those looking after him. Though still very young, may be at the age of two and unable to understand much, he tries to have his way. He may not be happy to do what you want to do and may sometimes react to you by crying out loud or trying to crawl away from you. This could be considered a beginning of revolution in the mind of a kid.

Teenage Rebellion Causes and Psychology

As the child grows and move toward adulthood, the level of understanding increases and he starts to take independent decisions. This is basically the reason for rebellion in teen age. The child wants to decide something on his or her own and you may want to impose your feelings on him. This is a natural process and to some extent also necessary for healthy transformation of the child into an adult. In case of oppression and suppression of feelings, the child may lose his sense of identity. Also, due to inability of the child to firmly decide on something like selection of vocation or professional line, the result may be rebellion.

The other type of rebellion in case of teens called faulted teenage could be due to improper parenting or improper guidance received from society. The phenomenon of the society or parents, when they consider themselves superior and suppress the feelings of the teenager, results in rebellion as the child is not ready to sacrifice what he considers as his rights. In case of improper relationship amongst the parents, the teens rebel against the society in which they live.

The rebellion of the teen age may or may not result in violation of rules and regulations. Some teenaged children may tend to be attracted towards illegal activities like drugs, alcohol, vandalism and other antisocial activities like ill feeling towards the opposite sex, while other teens may rebel against established social norms being unacceptable to them. They may like to dress up in a different manner or do things not generally seen in society.

How to Deal?

The parents should understand that rebellion is a part of the growth process of the child and should be ready to accept it as a part of life. While dealing with the teenaged child, the following may be kept in mind:

Be consistent in your dealing with the child. Inconsistent discipline makes the child test the limits to see how far he can go. Discipline and rules at home ensure that the child knows what he can do and to what extent he will be permitted.

Within the limits set by the parents, ensure that the child is made to be part of the decision making process. While discussing matters with the child ensure to be certain about the limits of flexibility in your dealing with the child.

Allow exception to the rules on certain occasions. In case of violation of rules, if the child accepts the fault and apologises, be ready to forget and forgive even if his behaviour has hurt you. You should be a safe landing place for your grown up child in case of trouble outside.

Try to spend as much time as possible with teen aged kids. Decide fun activities that can be done together on holidays. Go to a picnic and enjoy sports. Involve them in preparation of the events. When out together, try to ignore some misdeeds. When back home do not start to narrate what wrong he did. Recollect happy moments.

Practice what you preach. If you expect your child to be up and ready by a particular time and till that time you are in bed, there are all the chances of disobedience and rebellion if you insist on it. You should become a role model for the child.

Indulge in free and fair discussions on any subject with the teenager.

By practicing these, it is possible that the tendency in your child to rebel will reduce and he will discuss the problems with a confidence that they will be sorted out.

While arriving at the decision as to when to have one, a woman has to keep in mind a number of factors. She has to consider about her life with a small kid, about leaving her work, may be temporarily, and sacrificing comforts in her life to bring up a child.

When you are in the process of taking this important decision of life, which is generally taken by almost all married couples at one point of time, it is important to keep in mind that bringing up a child is an art and needs a lot of study. With all the study material available on the net, and a lot of published literature available, parenting has become a specialised art. Parents have to keep in mind a number of factors about organising themselves and also making their child disciplined.

A line of communication has to be maintained between the parents and kids at all times. This level of communication and method of doing it varies with the age of the child and his or nature. For better parenting it is necessary to keep in mind some of the tips given below. By trying them it is quite possible that you turn out to be a better parent:

It will be better to start your day with a big smile. To keep yourself and the children happy for the day, keeping yourself smiling and happy will help a lot. The first thing you may need to do in morning is awakening your child. This is generally a difficult task. Children will always like to sleep. The best way to make them get up will be by calling them with a sing song voice and a smile on your face. Try this even if you are tired and irritated with something.

Another step essential for better parenting when you have school going kids is to ensure that your child goes to school with his stomach full. This way he will feel satisfied and will remain healthy. Feeding your child will enable you to establish communication with her and you can discuss her plans for the day and explain to her some facts necessary for her good upkeep and discipline.

The most important tip for better parenting is that you make your children realize that they are important in your life. The way you are able to express to them of their importance in your life depends upon the age of the child. You may put a love note in their tiffin box, or put a cookie loved by the child in the tiffin. There could be other ways to surprise your child. You could leave some money with the school office on your child’s birthday for a kid party. This way a line of informal communication will always remain open between you and the kid, and the child will feel more secure both at home and outside, resulting in overall development.

If possible, be at home to receive your child when he is back home after school, even if he comes to drop his bag and runs away to play with fellow kids. Knowing that you will receive him and will be ready to help in case of any need will install a sense of security in child.

Even if you are tired after day’s work, or irritated about anything, always discuss the day with your child in the evening or at any time before she goes to bed. This discussion could give you the opportunity to do some detective work. You can come to know about her friends and activities during the day. Communication, both fair and open, could result in early detection of the child going astray.

Most of the young kids find it difficult to complete home work. After the child has had rest, you should help her to complete homework. This way you will be able to understand about her progress in studies. Your active interest will install a sense of security in the child about studies and you can spot the weak areas.

Eat dinner as a family. Both parents and the child should eat dinner together. Encourage the child to participate in dinner preparations. If the child is too small, she can be asked to lay the table, if grown up she can be asked to help in cooking or cleaning vegetables etc. This will induce a sense of responsibility and belonging in the child.

Always be ready to listen to the difficulties and demands of the child. Never try to ignore the suggestions of the child or laugh at the suggestions. Spending time together and having open discussion with the participation of one and all will help in family bonding. Story telling at bed time can be another way of communication with the children.

Never forget to find time for yourself and your spouse. For better parenting you need to have time for yourself for your recreation and rejuvenation. Enjoy long hot water bath or reading books and novels of your choice in whatever free time is available. Whenever possible go out for dinner or walk with your spouse to keep the bonds intact, as both of you were alone together before you had the child, and you have to be same way after the child grows up and ready to move out.

Making your child disciplined is the biggest challenge for parents. This is a taxing but rewarding experience for the parents. The techniques that are effective on a child differ from one child to the other. Also the environment in which a child is placed effects his behavior and the methods to be used to discipline him also differ. It is an admitted fact that the children born and brought up in unitary families are better behaved as compared to children living in joint families as they get more pampered and need stricter disciplinary methods.

There were times when it was considered that spanking is the best method to discipline the child but research on child behaviour has shown that this may be the method effective to some extent on the children in the age group of 2 to 6 if used sparingly. Even if other members of the family spank the child, it will be better to explain to them about drawbacks of spanking and benefits of other methods that can be used to discipline the child. Some of the techniques that will work well to discipline your child can be:

It will be better if you learn about development of childhood. A child passes through different stages of development as he grows up. All normal children behave in a particular manner at a particular age and under particular circumstances. If you understand the developmental stage of your child it will be easier for you to discipline him. You will be able to know when to discipline the child and when to ignore certain behaviour. A child may be well behaved when alone or when with you but may become uncontrollable when another kid of his age comes visiting. This is a natural phenomenon which will need to be ignored when the other child is around, but when the child is alone in your company, try explaining to him. Persuasion will be the best policy in such circumstances.

Natural consequences which the child will face, as a result of not being disciplined, is the best teacher. Tell the child of the consequences of his behaviour. If your child does not properly keep the toys and throws them here and there, instead of being harsh with him always, tell him that this way he can lose his toys or they may get damaged. Once the toys left outside are lost or damaged, the child will understand consequences. Similarly, if the child leaves his things in school, let him face the consequence. This way he will get better disciplined.

Continuously try to explain to the child of the logical consequences of indiscipline. If the child does not behave well with the children younger to him and breaks their toys, persuading him by telling him that an older child can cause damage to his toys may help. If the child does not follow rules of crossing the road or runs towards the middle of the road, show him photographs of accident victims and explain the consequences of his behaviour. This way it will be easier to discipline the child.

Distraction works well with pre-school children or toddlers. This is an effective tool to redirect the attention of the child from inappropriate to appropriate. Generally children insist on doing something which you do not consider appropriate like jumping on the sofa or the bed. In such a case distraction can work well to impart discipline and also enable the child to fulfil his desire. If you have a trampoline in the backyard of your home, ask the child to go there and jump. Or take the child to a garden and let him run around. If none of these is possible, the attention of the child can be diverted by making him play with some toy of his choice. Once the child settles down, you can tell him that jumping inside was not appropriate and he will understand what is to be done at home and outdoors.

Saying no to a child may result in development of sense of indiscipline or rebellion in the child. If you say no to the child a number of times, it is certain that he will not listen to you. Instead assert in a positive manner, this way the child will learn to be more disciplined. If you tell your child not to do a thing as this will result in breaking his toy, there are chances that the child will find an occasion and repeat that thing. Instead if you tell your child to do a thing to avoid damage to the toy, he will follow you. So instead of saying don’t do that say why don’t you do that, it will impart better discipline in the child.

Reward system can be one of the best techniques to discipline your child. It is not necessary that you give some physical reward to the child for some good deed, even words of appreciation at times can work wonders in disciplining the child. Thanking the child for some work done on your behalf or on your request, or praising the child for good behaviour during the last one hour or so could be the best method of imparting discipline. Occasionally the child should be rewarded with a cookie of his choice or you can reward him with a toy of his choice for good behaviour. Look for the time when the child is not behaving in a bad manner to reward.

You can introduce a reward system for the behaviour of the child. Give reward points when he is behaving in a good manner and deduct points when not behaving appropriately. The accumulated points can be traded with a gift of the choice of the child. Or the child could lose a privilege which he generally gets; like outing on weekends and dinner outside if the reward points are less than the decided numbers. This way the child will try to be disciplined and will develop this habit. You will need to be careful to ascertain that the child is not behaving for reward points only but developing the disciplinary habits even otherwise in his day to day dealing.

Parents are the first teachers of the child. If you behave in an appropriate manner in the presence of the child he will try to follow you. If you leave your things scattered in the room, the child is bound to develop a similar habit and leave his toys or books scattered all around.

If you are angry, control yourself and let the phase of anger pass and then try explaining the child to be disciplined. Your persuasion as a parent will do well, it is for you to decide which method works well, a combination of two or more can also be tried. Your spouse or family members should be supportive otherwise the child may develop the habit of taking shelter with them. Teach your child not to indulge in this habit otherwise there will be imminent punishment.

Slow parenting means parenting of children in the contact of nature without any interference of materialistic influence. We can also term it as ‘self raising’. Those were the days, when raising children was not a matter of planning. But today when to plan a baby, what will be their parenting style, everything is preplanned. So the decision of their parenting style has also been taken prior. Some parents believe on slow parenting whereas others raise question about the safety and surety of the child.

In slow parenting children are allowed to do what they think proper and parents just keep a watch over the child. Curiosity of the child leads to explore and discover things. Parents provide little help only where its too necessary, otherwise keep themselves away from the child and just have a look on him/her. This brings about a feeling of self dependency and they are encouraged to solve their problem.

This is a natural way of learning. When a child is left to learn in a natural environment, the child’s natural development takes place. Influence of any materialistic way doesn’t let the mind develop naturally. Watching TV, playing video games or joining classes of dance, swimming or any other sports will not let the mind to develop naturally.

Here creativity of their mind is developed. They explore ideas. The logic behind this is that the kids of animals learn by nature, so can our kids too. So let our children play in garden, to watch flowers, plants, birds, butterfly and other gifts of nature. In the classes of dance, swimming etc their creativity is influenced and their natural creativity is suppressed. In these classes they are over burdened and can’t enhance their creativity. So let them play in open air or garden without any burden instead of joining classes.

Generally parents give toys to their children and explain how to operate it. But those parents who believe in slow parenting give toys and observe how the child is managing it. Their skill to learn and understand comes out. May be the process is slow, but it will be their exploration, which will make them self dependent, and self capable to learn.

Self dependency makes children confident. Decision making capacity is developed in them. In authoritative parenting, children are ordered by parents and they have to obey it. They have to live according to their parents’ wish. This results in stress and behavioral problems. They couldn’t deal with problems and stress and give up easily. A confident and self reliant personality couldn’t be developed. They depend on their parents for every thing.

Children raised under slow parenting develop a capacity in them to face troubles. Therefore they are capable to lighten any trouble. Though there are many advantages of slow parenting, nevertheless all parents do not agree. Let us hope one day all can understand its advantage.

Its very difficult for the child to accept the fact and dealing with the loss of a parent in childhood. The mishap leaves behind a mental setback and it’s a difficult task to bring the child out of the situation. The child needs love from other parent. Love from other family members is also required. Responsibility of all the members towards the child increases, especially responsibility of the single parent.

The single parent will have to come out of his/her own grief and help the child to cope up with the loss. Teenagers and children coping with death of a parent develop feeling of insecurity, so keep themselves away from public and friends. This affects them badly. Their development, education everything is hampered. They become lonely and here problem begins. They lose control on their temper and patience. Finally they are pushed towards drug addiction, smoking and other criminal activities. They choose this way to get rid of their loneliness.

To protect the child from involving in these activities, don’t let the child to live alone silently. Not only the single parent but it becomes the responsibility of every member of the family to provide love and affection to the child. The single parent should take care that the child is getting love and affection at home as well as in school. He/she is not being neglected. If possible the single parent should ask help of elderly and should take their suggestions about good parenting. The single parent’s sensible training and parenting can control the situation from going worse.

The single parent’s will have to play the role of both mother and father as well as of a friend. He/ she should remain with him/her in all their need. He/she should not feel that whom to share his/her pleasure or grief. Share their every moment. Let the child know the fact and help him/her to accept it. Only love and affection can bear courage in him/her to accept it. Don’t let the child’s education be hampered. Provide best education according to your ability. Education brings maturity in the child. A good environment will help the child to normalize himself.

Being indulged in study and home works the child will forget the unfortunate past slowly. Parent’s sound financial condition is also helpful in getting the child normal. Scarcity of materialistic things will make the child even sorrier. Keep in mind that the demands should be met as far as possible. But it is also a fact that the special treatment makes the child stubborn, so a very careful and wise parenting is required. You will have to give quality time to the child, to celebrate his/her success or to console the failure. In this way you can help the child to come out of the trauma. Remember, loss or death of a person can never be fulfilled but proper care can minimize it.

But just being a mother and father is not completion of duty. Duty begins after a baby comes in this world.

Practically children need parent until the age of 18 years and up to this age legally also they are children. So taking care of children up to this age physically, emotionally, medically and educationally is duty of parents. Failing any of these duties come under child negligence.

Children are neglected not only by parents but they can be neglected by step parents, day care centre personnel, in school or by relatives to whom the child depends.

When a child depends on caretaker, relatives unwillingly taking care of, a day care centre or an orphanage are neglected purposely, however parents neglect unknowingly. Sometimes due to lack of awareness, if the parents are not of a mature age or they are illiterate. It may be due to poverty or sometimes due to busy routine of parents. Whatever the reason may be, but the sufferer is the poor child.

Not providing basic amenities to survive comes under physical negligence. Sufficient food, nutritious diet, clothing and any physical need are basic requirements. This type of negligence can affect health and growth of the child. The child can fell ill seriously, may be fatal too or any serious health problem can come on surface in the grown up years. Negligent supervision is also physical negligence. If not attended the baby can fall from height, cut or burn himself, consume something toxic, may get electric shock or can undergo any other serious accident. Physical negligence is the most serious type of negligence. It should be handled seriously by law.

Some children are provided with all the needs and luxuries but there is nobody to love, to talk to hug and to spend time with. Its also a type of negligence, emotional negligence. When a child can’t share his/her feelings with parents, becomes emotionally disturbed, and development of personality is hampered. Such children can develop psychological problems like separation anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, depression, lack of confidence etc. To satisfy their emotional need they look outside and fell prey of bad company, drug abuse, alcohol, smoking and many other unhealthy habits. The busy parents should think about their responsibility and carve some quality time for their child. Some parents don’t understand the importance of emotional need, because they have suffered same type of negligence in their past. Mostly this type of negligence is faced by children in child care centre, in schools or in orphanage. So these centers should be under strict government supervision. Violation of any rule should be punishable strictly.

Not giving proper and timely medical aid is under medical negligence. Children should be checked up regularly and vaccinated timely. Parents often ignore any health problem of the child and doesn’t take complain of the child seriously, and treat it in their own way. The problem becomes serious. Poverty is also a hurdle in the way of providing proper treatment. Sometimes medical negligence leaves behind some unrepairable loss. Basic education is also right of every child. But even now a good percentage of children are deprived of it. Again the main reasons are poverty and illiteracy. In many countries gender bias is prevalent. Female children are debarred from education.

Children are future of any country. Parent’s society’s and government’s joint effort can make their future bright.

Babies are born with the ability to cry. Babies cry generally to tell us that something is wrong like hunger, wet bottom, cold or hot, tired etc. Sometimes the baby has met all his or her needs, yet continues to cry. Though all newborn cry. When a child who is otherwise healthy cries for 3-4 hours per day, it is a condition known as colic, which is perfectly normal and eventually goes away on its own generally after 3 or 4 months of age.

To calm a colicky baby, don’t despair, only few facts about colic should be known to you. Colicky babies suck well and have a good appetite. They are otherwise healthy and growing well. Colicky baby likes to be cuddled and handled. If the baby seems uncomfortable when handled or is difficult to console, cry sounds odd, crying is associated with poor feeding, unusual breathing, talk to the doctor as these symptoms are not like colic.

Spiting milk from time to time happens in colicky baby. Stool in colicky baby is normal. But if the baby is vomiting or if it is diarrhea or dysentery, consult the doctor immediately.

Colic is one of the commonest problem during first few months of a baby. Scientists and medical experts still have no idea what causes colic. All they know is that it’s pain in the abdomen and stomach. Many consider it genetic, some consider it as allergy that baby gets from milk, either breast milk or bottle milk. Baby swallows air when drinks milk too rapidly, which can cause pain in the stomach after feeding.

Treating or curing colic is not possible, since there is no specific reason of colic is known. Few effective things the parents can try to soothe the colicky baby can be listed as below:

Try to soothe baby, some are comforted by motion-being walked back and forth in the room, or swing holding in arms.

Going outside the room or if possible go on drive.

Sometimes baby responds to sound, any kind of soft music or soft sound, mild singing can stop the baby’s crying and even the baby can sleep too.

Wrapping and swaddling will provide colicky baby relief.

Don’t overfeed the baby.

Examine along with your pediatrician if your baby is allergic to some food that he or she is taking in. Allergens are generally passed from mother to the child by breast milk. So, moms are advised to take restricted food, and to avoid gas producing items in her meal.

Reasons of prolonged crying may be something other than colic. There may be some general reasons like, the baby may be ill. There may eye irritation or pain in ear. Sometimes there may be pain due to other object like pin in the cloth or diaper, yarn or hair wrapped around the baby’s digit, uncomfortable clothing, etc. Watch everything carefully while baby cry abnormally.
