Pink Eye In Children Or Infants

pink eye conjunctivitis childrenPink eye is a disease, also called ‘conjunctivitis’ and often referred to as ‘red eye’. This is a kind infection that affects the eyes in infants or babies. This disease may occur in adults as well. Those infected would have a red patch on the white part of the eye and inner eyelids. This would cause lot of itching, swelling, eye discharge and irritation. School going children get affected by this eye problem frequently, because they come in the contact with many other mates.

The mostly known types of infections causing pink eye in toddlers are:

  • Bacterial infection of the eye
  • Viral infection of the eye
  • Eye allergy
  • Dust and smoke

These generally affect both eyes. But the good news is that they don’t last too long and get within 24 hours with treatment. Those people around the child have to be cautious as some of these can be contagious. Its better to check up the doctor whether is contagious or not.

Cure for Pink Eye

Bacterial/Viral Conjunctivitis: Normally antibiotics such as topical drops or ointments are prescribed.
Allergic Conjunctivitis: Anti allergy medicines like Alocril, Patanol etc. are prescribed for speedy recovery

Precautions

1. The eye discharge should wipe immediately with warm moist cloth. This will reduce the irritation in the eye.
2. For contagious infection, to prevent it from spreading the hands should be washed with soap and water after the touching the eye or discharge.  
3.
Don’t let the child rub his eyes frequently as it would only increment the discomfort.
